In their aim to create dragonborn, they accidentally created smaller, less magically capable draconic humanoids: kobolds. Kobolds were initially treated as a mistake by wyrms and dragons but ironically made a name for their kind during the very wars they were mistakenly created for. Kobolds are excellent at sneaking about due to their small size, and their inaptitude for magic made them hard to detect by the arcane infused colossus—who were tuned to detect dragon's natural surplus of arcane energy. Kobolds served as superb scouts and informants. They became invaluable to their creators and procreated constantly at the command of wyrms and dragons. Unfortunately for kobolds, the colossus forces won, the wyrm gods were sealed away, wyrms fled Yanis, and dragons took to hiding. This left kobolds alone and gave them free will for the first time in their existence. Kobolds were seen as lesser dragon spawn and were often targeted by half-giants and djinn. They eventually fled to caves—some seeking protection from their former dragon leaders, some seeking to start a new life independent of both dragons and war. Eventually, kobolds came to find a niche for themselves in Yanis. They became predominately subterranean creatures but occasionally found pockets in cities and settlements in which they could thrive. Always the underdog, and ever scrappy, kobolds are seemingly always underestimated. --- ### Appearance & Biology Kobolds are slightly less humanoid looking than dragonborn. They are bipedal, yes, but usually have a slight hunch in posture or have stronger draconic facial features than that of dragonborn. They come in a variety of scale colors but some are rarer than others due to inbreeding in older generations. These scrappy humanoids are roughly the same height as halflings and may be more adroit than halflings due to their nimble clawed fingers. They almost always have tails—which help them balance and add to their natural roguish skillset—and some (very rarely) grow wings. Despite hailing from dragons, kobolds are unable to reproduce with any other species than their own. --- ### Species Traits #### Core Traits > [!custom-trait-locked]- 1️⃣ Draconic Essence. > - Resistant to one of the following damage types. > - [[Combat#Damage|Acid]] > - [[Combat#Damage|Cold]] > - [[Combat#Damage|Fire]] > - [[Combat#Damage|Lightning]] > - [[Combat#Damage|Necrotic]] > - [[Combat#Damage|Poison]] > - [[Combat#Damage|Psychic]] > - [[Combat#Damage|Radiant]] > - [[Combat#Damage|Thunder]] > [!custom-trait-locked]- 2️⃣ Superior Darkvision. > - Darkvision up to 120 feet. #### Optional Traits > [!custom-trait-unlocked]- 1️⃣ Combat Compelled. > - Proficiency in any two martial weapons. > [!custom-trait-unlocked]- 1️⃣ Draconic Defiance. > - Advantage on saving throws to avoid or end the [[Conditions#Frightened|frightened]] condition. > - Immune to the [[Conditions#Frightened|frightened]] condition caused by dragon creatures. > [!custom-trait-unlocked]- 1️⃣ Kobold Bite. > - You may attack as a bonus action using your bite.
