# Carpenter
## Overview
- **Primary Tool:** Carpenter's Tools
- **Primary Ability:** [[Abilities#Strength|Strength]]
- **Available Checks:**
- Assess the structural integrity of a wooden structure or object
- Identify wood type, grain, quality, or origin
- Detect hidden compartments, traps, or modifications in wooden objects
- [[#Performing Carpentry|Perform a carpentry check]]
### Creation Types
| **Creations** | **Description** |
| -------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Furniture & Fixtures | Tables, chairs, shelves, doors, and chests. Functional items for living spaces, storage, and fortification. |
| Structural Works | Walls, floors, rafters, frames, bridges, and platforms. Load-bearing or shelter-creating constructions; demand precision joinery. |
| Vehicles & Vessels | Carts, wagons, wheels, sledges, and small boat hulls. Larger vehicles may require multiple work sessions and multiple crafters. |
| Tools & Equipment | Handles, frames, poles, ladders, and scaffolding. Functional utility items that can complement other professions. |
| Mechanisms & Traps | Triggered devices, hidden doors, counterweights, and pressure plates. Require precision joinery and a strong understanding of mechanical advantage. |
### Ingredient Types
| **Ingredients** | **Description** |
| --- | --- |
| π Processed Lumber | Planked, planed, or cut timber ready for joinery. Sourced from sawmills or processed personally from raw timber using carpenter's tools. |
| π Raw Timber | Logs, branches, felled trees, or driftwood. Found in the wild or purchased. Must be processed before use in most applications; quality of wood species matters. |
| π Adhesives & Treatments | Wood glue, pine resin, varnishes, stains, and preservatives. Critical for structural integrity, weather resistance, and the quality of the final finish. |
### Creation Cost & Time
| **Carpenter Level** | **Creation Slots** |
| --- | --- |
| Level 0 β
Novice | 1 |
| Level 1 β
Intermediate | 2 |
| Level 2 β
Advanced | 3 |
| Level 3 β
Superior | 4 |
| Level 4 β
Master | 5 |
All creation slots are utilized over an 8 hour period.
| **Rarity** | **Carpentry DC** | **Carpentry Die** | **Slot Cost** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Common | 10 | 1d4 | 1 |
| Uncommon | 15 | 1d6 | 1 |
| Rare | 20 | 1d8 | 2 |
| Very Rare | 25 | 1d10 | 3 |
| Legendary | 30 | 1d12 | 4 |
### Performing Carpentry
> [!faq]- Carpentry Creation Example
> To build a ***Reinforced Chest with Lock Mechanism***, an Uncommon storage item that grants advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks made to force it open and conceals a simple mechanical trap, follow the steps below:
>
> **1. Gather ingredients**
> The ingredients for a Reinforced Chest with Lock Mechanism are:
> π Ironwood Resin (Adhesive)
> π Ironwood Planks (Processed Lumber)
> π Iron Lock Fittings
> For this example, we'll assume you have purchased Ironwood Resin and Iron Lock Fittings from a local smith and supply shop.
>
> **2. Roll a carpentry check to determine the quality of construction.**
> The DC is equal to...
> *the rarity of the creation* β *your carpenter level* β *your [[Abilities#Strength|Strength]] modifier* (minimum of 0) β *your proficiency bonus* (only if proficient with Carpenter's Tools)
> - Upon success, you waste no materials and the chest is built to full specification.
> - Upon [[#Failing A Carpentry Check|failure]], you waste materials and the process takes longer.
>
> **3. Process lumber.**
> In this case, you succeed and now need to cut and plane ***Ironwood Planks*** from raw timber, which costs 1d6 *Ironwood Logs* β *Strength modifier* (minimum of 0) per chest.
>
> **4. Add remaining ingredients.**
> All other listed ingredients are consumed at a 1-to-1 ratio unless otherwise stated.
> In this example, 1 Ironwood Resin and 1 set of Iron Lock Fittings are consumed.
### Failing A Carpentry Check
On a failed carpentry check, roll a *carpentry die* β *your carpenter level* to see how many ingredients are lost (resulting in a minimum of 1). You must roll separately for both *processed lumber* and *raw timber*. For time wasted (resulting in a minimum of 1 hour), roll a *carpentry die* β *your proficiency bonus* (only if you are proficient with Carpenter's Tools).
## Recipes
Carpentry patterns and construction plans are passed between builders, guilds, and architects. Known collections include:
- *The Joiner's Handbook* β Foundational plans for furniture, doors, and common fixtures.
- *Master Builder's Compendium* β Advanced structural designs, mechanical trap schematics, and vehicle blueprints.
