Gather ingredients** > The ingredients for Boots of the Silent Step are: > 🞜 Shadowmoss Wax (Adhesive & Sealant) > 🞛 Velvetcalf Leather (Treated) > 🞚 Raw Velvetcalf Hide > For this example, we'll assume Shadowmoss Wax has been sourced from an alchemist or herbalist. > > **2. Roll a cobblery check to determine the quality of construction.** > The DC is equal to... > *the rarity of the creation* — *your cobbler level* — *your [[Abilities#Dexterity|Dexterity]] modifier* (minimum of 0) — *your proficiency bonus* (only if proficient with Cobbler's Tools) > - Upon success, you waste no materials and the boots are constructed to full specification. > - Upon [[#Failing A Cobblery Check|failure]], you waste materials and the process takes longer. > > **3. Treat the leather.** > In this case, you succeed and now need to tan and finish ***Velvetcalf Leather*** from raw hide, which costs 1d6 *Raw Velvetcalf Hides* — *Dexterity modifier* (minimum of 0) per pair of boots. > > **4. Add remaining ingredients.** > All other listed ingredients are consumed at a 1-to-1 ratio unless otherwise stated. > In this example, 1 application of Shadowmoss Wax is consumed. ### Failing A Cobblery Check On a failed cobblery check, roll a *cobblery die* — *your cobbler level* to see how many ingredients are lost (resulting in a minimum of 1). You must roll separately for both *treated leather* and *raw hides & materials*. For time wasted (resulting in a minimum of 1 hour), roll a *cobblery die* — *your proficiency bonus* (only if you are proficient with Cobbler's Tools). ## Recipes Cobblery patterns and construction techniques are passed through apprenticeship.
