# Forger
## Overview
- **Primary Tool:** Forgery Kit
- **Primary Ability:** [[Abilities#Dexterity|Dexterity]]
- **Available Checks:**
- Detect whether a document is forged or genuine
- Identify the technique, style, or handwriting of a forger
- Assess the quality and likely success rate of a given forgery
- [[#Performing Forgery|Perform a forgery check]]
### Creation Types
| **Creations** | **Description** |
| --- | --- |
| Document Forgeries | Forged letters, contracts, receipts, and official correspondence. The most common forgery work; value depends heavily on the authority of the institution being imitated. |
| Seal & Stamp Forgeries | Reproductions of wax seals, signet ring impressions, and official stamps. A convincing seal can elevate a mediocre document forgery to one that passes expert scrutiny. |
| Identity Documents | Forged travel papers, guild memberships, writs of passage, merchant licenses, and noble patents. Among the most valuable forgeries β and the most dangerous to be caught with. |
| Artistic Forgeries | Convincing reproductions of signed artworks, illustrated manuscripts, and rare maps. Require knowledge of the original artist's period, materials, and technique. |
| Magical Document Forgeries | Forged spell scrolls, enchanted contracts, and arcane certifications. Require an understanding of magical notation in addition to standard forgery skills. |
### Ingredient Types
| **Ingredients** | **Description** |
| --- | --- |
| π Prepared Inks & Papers | Aged, tinted, or specially formulated inks and pre-treated papers matched to the target document's era, institution, and material composition. Preparation is the most skill-intensive stage of any forgery. |
| π Raw Materials | Blank parchment, fresh vellum, wax, standard inks, and seal blanks. The starting stock that is processed into matched materials. |
| π Aging & Treatment Compounds | Acidic washes, smoke treatments, oil-based patinas, UV-blocking fixatives, and humidity exposure techniques. Make documents appear genuinely old, worn, or stained β a forgery that looks too new fails instantly. |

### Performing Forgery
> [!faq]- Forgery Creation Example
> To produce a ***Royal Writ of Safe Passage***, an Uncommon forged document granting the bearer immunity from search and detention by city watch and border patrols and passing all but expert scrutiny, follow the steps below:
>
> **1. Gather ingredients**
> The ingredients for a Royal Writ of Safe Passage are:
> π Crown Seal Aging Compound & Patina Wash
> π Royal Ink Blend & Aged Vellum (Prepared)
> π Blank Vellum Sheet & Base Ink
> For this example, we'll assume a genuine writ has been examined beforehand to match paper weight and seal positioning.
>
> **2. Roll a forgery check to determine the accuracy and convincingness of the document.**
> The DC is equal to...
> *the rarity of the creation* β *your forger level* β *your [[Abilities#Dexterity|Dexterity]] modifier* (minimum of 0) β *your proficiency bonus* (only if proficient with a Forgery Kit)
> - Upon success, you waste no materials and the forgery passes standard inspection.
> - Upon [[#Failing A Forgery Check|failure]], you waste materials and the process takes longer.
>
> **3. Prepare matched inks and paper.**
> In this case, you succeed and now need to age and tone ***Blank Vellum and Base Ink*** to match the original, which costs 1d6 *Blank Vellum Sheets* β *Dexterity modifier* (minimum of 0) per document.
>
> **4. Add remaining ingredients.**
> All other listed ingredients are consumed at a 1-to-1 ratio unless otherwise stated.
> In this example, 1 portion of Crown Seal Aging Compound & Patina Wash is consumed.
### Failing A Forgery Check
On a failed forgery check, roll a *forgery die* β *your forger level* to see how many ingredients are lost (resulting in a minimum of 1). You must roll separately for both *prepared inks & papers* and *raw materials*. For time wasted (resulting in a minimum of 1 hour), roll a *forgery die* β *your proficiency bonus* (only if you are proficient with a Forgery Kit).
> [!note]
> A forgery that is detected during active use is considered a total failure. Any creature with expertise in the relevant institution or script that examines it closely may call for a contested Intelligence (Investigation) check against your forgery check result.
