# Mason
## Overview
- **Primary Tool:** Mason's Tools
- **Primary Ability:** [[Abilities#Strength|Strength]]
- **Available Checks:**
- Assess the structural integrity, age, or construction method of a stone structure
- Identify stone types, quarry origins, or construction techniques from visual inspection
- Detect hidden doors, concealed passages, or structural stress points in stonework
- [[#Performing Masonry|Perform a masonry check]]
### Creation Types
| **Creations** | **Description** |
| --- | --- |
| Walls & Fortifications | Defensive walls, battlements, parapets, and towers. Provide physical cover and structural defense; essential to castle and fortress construction. |
| Flooring & Pavements | Stone floors, cobblestone paths, and decorative tilework. Durable surfaces suited to both functional and ornamental applications. |
| Columns & Arches | Load-bearing structural elements critical to larger construction. Arches distribute weight and are hallmarks of advanced masonry technique. |
| Sculptures & Monuments | Decorative and commemorative stonework carved from a single block or assembled from multiple pieces. May depict figures, crests, or events of historical significance. |
| Enchanted Stonework | Magically reinforced or animated stone. May incorporate runic wards against damage, stone sentinel constructs, or permanent magical effects bound to the structure. |
### Ingredient Types
| **Ingredients** | **Description** |
| --- | --- |
| π Dressed Stone | Quarried, cut, and shaped stone blocks ready for laying or carving. Processed from raw stone through chiseling, sawing, and grinding. Block quality determines load tolerance and finish. |
| π Raw Stone & Rubble | Uncut stone, fieldstone, gravel, and construction rubble. Quarried, gathered from the landscape, or cleared from a site. Must be dressed before precision applications. |
| π Mortar & Binding Agents | Lime mortar, hydraulic cement, pozzolan mixes, and mineral-based adhesives. Precise mixing ratios are critical β incorrect proportions result in weak joints, cracking, or water penetration. |
### Creation Cost & Time
| **Mason Level** | **Creation Slots** |
| --- | --- |
| Level 0 β
Novice | 1 |
| Level 1 β
Intermediate | 2 |
| Level 2 β
Advanced | 3 |
| Level 3 β
Superior | 4 |
| Level 4 β
Master | 5 |
All creation slots are utilized over an 8 hour period.
| **Rarity** | **Masonry DC** | **Masonry Die** | **Slot Cost** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Common | 10 | 1d4 | 1 |
| Uncommon | 15 | 1d6 | 1 |

### Performing Masonry
> [!faq]- Masonry Creation Example
> To construct a ***Runic Ward Pillar***, an Uncommon stone column inscribed with protective runes that imposes disadvantage on the attack rolls of undead creatures within 10 feet of it, follow the steps below:
>
> **1. Gather ingredients**
> The ingredients for a Runic Ward Pillar are:
> π Hallowed Mortar Mix (Binding Agent)
> π Dressed Basalt Block
> π Raw Basalt Stone
> For this example, we'll assume Hallowed Mortar Mix has been purchased from a temple stonemason.
>
> **2. Roll a masonry check to determine the quality of construction and rune inscription.**
> The DC is equal to...
> *the rarity of the creation* β *your mason level* β *your [[Abilities#Strength|Strength]] modifier* (minimum of 0) β *your proficiency bonus* (only if proficient with Mason's Tools)
> - Upon success, you waste no materials and the pillar is constructed to full specification.
> - Upon [[#Failing A Masonry Check|failure]], you waste materials and the process takes longer.
>
> **3. Dress the stone.**
> In this case, you succeed and now need to cut and shape a ***Basalt Block*** from raw stone, which costs 1d6 *Raw Basalt Pieces* β *Strength modifier* (minimum of 0) per pillar.
>
> **4. Add remaining ingredients.**
> All other listed ingredients are consumed at a 1-to-1 ratio unless otherwise stated.
> In this example, 1 batch of Hallowed Mortar Mix is consumed.
### Failing A Masonry Check
On a failed masonry check, roll a *masonry die* β *your mason level* to see how many ingredients are lost (resulting in a minimum of 1). You must roll separately for both *dressed stone* and *raw stone & rubble*. For time wasted (resulting in a minimum of 1 hour), roll a *masonry die* β *your proficiency bonus* (only if you are proficient with Mason's Tools).
