# Navigator
## Overview
- **Primary Tool:** Navigator's Tools
- **Primary Ability:** [[Abilities#Intelligence|Intelligence]]
- **Available Checks:**
- Determine your current position using stars, landmarks, or instruments
- Chart a course between two known points accounting for terrain, currents, or weather
- Detect errors, outdated information, or deliberate misdirection in a chart or route
- [[#Performing Navigation|Perform a navigation check]]
### Creation Types
| **Creations** | **Description** |
| --- | --- |
| Dead Reckoning Plots | Positional estimates calculated from known speed, heading, and elapsed time. The most accessible navigation technique; accuracy degrades over long distances without correction. |
| Stellar Fixes | Precise positional calculations derived from sextant observations of celestial bodies. Highly accurate but require clear skies and reference tables. |
| Route Plans | Detailed course charts with annotated waypoints, hazard markers, estimated travel times, and contingency routes. Used to brief crews, guide overland expeditions, or file with port authorities. |
| Navigational Charts | Original sea, river, or aerial charts produced from accumulated personal observations. The most lasting and sellable product of navigational expertise. |
| Enchanted Navigation Aids | Compasses, charts, or instruments magically attuned to always point toward a specific location, person, or planar feature. Among the most valuable navigational tools. |
### Ingredient Types
| **Ingredients** | **Description** |
| --- | --- |
| 🞛 Compiled Observation Data | Recorded bearings, depth soundings, current notes, landmark triangulations, and celestial measurements gathered through direct observation. The quality of a chart or plot is bounded entirely by the quality of data that underlies it. |
| 🞚 Raw Materials | Blank charts, parchment, vellum, drafting inks, and instrument components. The physical medium through which navigation work is documented and communicated. |
| 🞜 Astronomical & Mathematical References | Precise ephemeris tables, logarithm tables, tide tables, and harmonic constants. Errors in reference data propagate through every calculation made from them — an outdated almanac is worse than none. |
### Creation Cost & Time
| **Navigator Level** | **Creation Slots** |
| --- | --- |
| Level 0 –
Novice | 1 |
| Level 1 –
Intermediate | 2 |
| Level 2 –
Advanced | 3 |
| Level 3 –
Superior | 4 |
| Level 4 –
Master | 5 |
All creation slots are utilized over an 8 hour period.
| **Rarity** | **Navigation DC** | **Navigation Die** | **Slot Cost** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Common | 10 | 1d4 | 1 |
| Uncommon | 15 | 1d6 | 1 |
| Rare | 20 | 1d8 | 2 |
| Very Rare | 25 | 1d10 | 3 |
| Legendary | 30 | 1d12 | 4 |
### Performing Navigation
> [!faq]- Navigation Creation Example
> To produce a ***Verified Sea Chart of the Stormreach Passage***, an Uncommon navigational chart that grants advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks made to navigate the Stormreach Passage and identifies all known reefs, shoals, and seasonal current patterns, follow the steps below:
>
> **1. Gather ingredients**
> The ingredients for a Verified Sea Chart are:
> 🞜 Current Tide Tables & Stellar Ephemeris (Reference)
> 🞛 Compiled Passage Survey Notes (Observation Data)
> 🞚 Heavy Vellum Chart Sheet & Drafting Ink
> For this example, we'll assume current tide tables have been purchased at a port authority or navigator's guild.
>
> **2. Roll a navigation check to determine the accuracy and completeness of the chart.**
> The DC is equal to...
> *the rarity of the creation* — *your navigator level* — *your [[Abilities#Intelligence|Intelligence]] modifier* (minimum of 0) — *your proficiency bonus* (only if proficient with Navigator's Tools)
> - Upon success, you waste no materials and the chart is accurate and clearly presented.
> - Upon [[#Failing A Navigation Check|failure]], you waste materials and the process takes longer.
>
> **3. Compile the observations.**
> In this case, you succeed and now need to consolidate ***Passage Survey Notes*** from prior traversals of the route, which costs 1d6 *Survey Sketches or Log Entries* — *Intelligence modifier* (minimum of 0) per chart.
>
> **4. Add remaining ingredients.**
> All other listed ingredients are consumed at a 1-to-1 ratio unless otherwise stated.
> In this example, 1 Heavy Vellum Chart Sheet and 1 set of Drafting Inks are consumed.
### Failing A Navigation Check
On a failed navigation check, roll a *navigation die* — *your navigator level* to see how many ingredients are lost (resulting in a minimum of 1). You must roll separately for both *compiled observation data* and *raw materials*. For time wasted (resulting in a minimum of 1 hour), roll a *navigation die* — *your proficiency bonus* (only if you are proficient with Navigator's Tools).
> [!note]
> A chart produced on a catastrophically failed navigation check may contain deliberate-seeming errors indistinguishable from intentional misdirection. The navigator does not know the chart is inaccurate until it is used in the field.
## Recipes
Navigational methods are formalized within maritime academies and the personal journals of experienced pilots. Known reference works include:
