# Thief
## Overview
- **Primary Tool:** Thieves' Tools
- **Primary Ability:** [[Abilities#Dexterity|Dexterity]]
- **Available Checks:**
- Pick a mechanical lock or disarm a mechanical trap
- Assess the complexity, quality, or maker of a lock or security device
- Identify the mechanism type or bypass technique required for a given security measure
- [[#Performing Thievery|Perform a thievery check]]
### Creation Types
| **Creations** | **Description** |
| --- | --- |
| Lock Picks & Bypass Tools | Custom-made picks, tension wrenches, rakes, and bypass shims. Crafting your own tools to match a known lock type significantly reduces picking difficulty. |
| Bypass Devices | Shimmed hinges, false tumblers, relay contacts, and mechanical override components. Used to circumvent rather than pick a lock mechanism. |
| Trap Disarming Components | Custom clips, counterweights, locking pins, and cutting tools precisely sized to disable specific trap mechanisms without triggering them. |
| Security Assessments | Detailed written analyses of a target's locks, traps, and physical security. May be sold to other thieves or used to plan a job. |
| Enchanted Lock-Breaking Tools | Thieves' tools enhanced with magical properties — self-adjusting picks, soundless tension wrenches, or divination-linked bypass devices. |
### Ingredient Types
| **Ingredients** | **Description** |
| --- | --- |
| 🞛 Machined Tool Components | Precision-filed picks, ground tension wrenches, shaped shims, and calibrated bypass pieces. Produced from raw metal stock through careful filing, grinding, and polishing to exact tolerances. |
| 🞚 Raw Metal Stock | Hard wire, thin sheet metal, spring steel strip, and small metal rod. Purchased from smiths or recovered from broken tools and discarded hardware. |
| 🞜 Lubricants, Coatings & Bonding Agents | Precision lock oils, noise-dampening wax coatings, magnetic field compounds, and arcane activation agents. Prevent tool breakage, reduce audible feedback, and — in enchanted tools — enable magical function. |
### Creation Cost & Time
| **Thief Level** | **Creation Slots** |
| --- | --- |
| Level 0 –
Novice | 1 |
| Level 1 –
Intermediate | 2 |
| Level 2 –
Advanced | 3 |
| Level 3 –
Superior | 4 |
| Level 4 –
Master | 5 |
All creation slots are utilized over an 8 hour period.
| **Rarity** | **Thievery DC** | **Thievery Die** | **Slot Cost** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Common | 10 | 1d4 | 1 |
| Uncommon | 15 | 1d6 | 1 |

### Performing Thievery
> [!faq]- Thievery Creation Example
> To craft a set of ***Masterwork Tumbler Picks***, an Uncommon set of lock picks that grants advantage on Dexterity checks made to open pin-tumbler locks and reduces the time required to pick such locks by half, follow the steps below:
>
> **1. Gather ingredients**
> The ingredients for Masterwork Tumbler Picks are:
> 🞜 Precision Lock Oil & Noise-Dampening Wax
> 🞛 Spring Steel Pick Blanks (Machined Components)
> 🞚 Spring Steel Strip Stock
> For this example, we'll assume Precision Lock Oil has been purchased from a locksmith's supplier.
>
> **2. Roll a thievery check to determine the quality and precision of the finished tools.**
> The DC is equal to...
> *the rarity of the creation* — *your thief level* — *your [[Abilities#Dexterity|Dexterity]] modifier* (minimum of 0) — *your proficiency bonus* (only if proficient with Thieves' Tools)
> - Upon success, you waste no materials and the tools are crafted to full specification.
> - Upon [[#Failing A Thievery Check|failure]], you waste materials and the process takes longer.
>
> **3. File and shape the components.**
> In this case, you succeed and now need to file and shape ***Spring Steel Pick Blanks*** from raw strip stock, which costs 1d6 *lengths of Spring Steel Strip* — *Dexterity modifier* (minimum of 0) per set.
>
> **4. Add remaining ingredients.**
> All other listed ingredients are consumed at a 1-to-1 ratio unless otherwise stated.
> In this example, 1 set of Precision Lock Oil & Noise-Dampening Wax is consumed.
### Failing A Thievery Check
On a failed thievery check, roll a *thievery die* — *your thief level* to see how many ingredients are lost (resulting in a minimum of 1). You must roll separately for both *machined tool components* and *raw metal stock*. For time wasted (resulting in a minimum of 1 hour), roll a *thievery die* — *your proficiency bonus* (only if you are proficient with Thieves' Tools).
> [!note]
> A tool that breaks inside a lock during an actual picking attempt is not a crafting failure — it is a use failure. Broken tools inside a lock impose disadvantage on subsequent picking attempts until the fragment is removed.
