Prized by temples, collectors, and nobility; value scales sharply with detail and wood quality. | | Weapons & Weapon Components | Bows, crossbow stocks, arrow shafts, and carved weapon handles. Woodcarving is essential to the construction of ranged weapons and contributes significantly to their performance. | | Functional Objects | Wooden spoons, bowls, frames, pipes, combs, and utility items. Common output of most woodcarvers; sold in bulk to merchants and households. | | Arcane Focuses & Wands | Carved wooden implements used as spellcasting focuses. The wood species, grain direction, and carving patterns can influence magical conductivity. | | Enchanted Carvings | Magically attuned wooden objects incorporating carved runic patterns, bound nature spirits, or infused magical properties. | ### Ingredient Types | **Ingredients** | **Description** | | --- | --- | | 🞛 Worked Wood Blanks | Pre-shaped rough-carved wooden forms ready for detail work. Processed from raw timber through splitting, roughing, and primary shaping. The blank determines the final piece's form and structural direction. | | 🞚 Raw Timber & Branches | Seasoned hardwood or softwood, select branches, roots, and burls. Chosen for grain pattern, density, and magical affinity. Must be dried and seasoned before precise carving is possible. | | 🞜 Finishing Oils, Waxes & Sealants | Boiled linseed oil, beeswax, carnauba wax, shellac, and arcane wood treatments. Determines the final surface finish, long-term durability, moisture resistance, and magical receptiveness of the piece. | ### Creation Cost & Time | **Woodcarver Level** | **Creation Slots** | | --- | --- | | Level 0 –
Novice | 1 | | Level 1 –
Intermediate | 2 | | Level 2 –
Advanced | 3 | | Level 3 –
Superior | 4 | | Level 4 –
Master | 5 | All creation slots are utilized over an 8 hour period. | **Rarity** | **Woodcarving DC** | **Woodcarving Die** | **Slot Cost** | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Common | 10 | 1d4 | 1 | | Uncommon | 15 | 1d6 | 1 | | Rare | 20 | 1d8 | 2 | | Very Rare | 25 | 1d10 | 3 | | Legendary | 30 | 1d12 | 4 | ### Performing Woodcarving > [!faq]- Woodcarving Creation Example > To carve a ***Whispering Wand of the Elderwood***, an Uncommon arcane focus made from ancient rowan wood that grants its wielder a +1 bonus to spell attack rolls when casting enchantment spells, follow the steps below: > > **1. Gather ingredients** > The ingredients for a Whispering Wand of the Elderwood are: > 🞜 Moonwater Sealant (Finishing Oil) > 🞛 Rowan Blank (Worked Wood Blank) > 🞚 Aged Rowan Branch > For this example, we'll assume Moonwater Sealant has been purchased from an alchemist or herbalist. > > **2. Roll a woodcarving check to determine the precision and quality of the carving.** > The DC is equal to... > *the rarity of the creation* — *your woodcarver level* — *your [[Abilities#Dexterity|Dexterity]] modifier* (minimum of 0) — *your proficiency bonus* (only if proficient with Woodcarver's Tools) > - Upon success, you waste no materials and the wand is carved to full specification. > - Upon [[#Failing A Woodcarving Check|failure]], you waste materials and the process takes longer. > > **3. Shape the blank.** > In this case, you succeed and now need to rough-carve a ***Rowan Blank*** from the aged branch, which costs 1d6 *Aged Rowan Branches* — *Dexterity modifier* (minimum of 0) per wand. > > **4. Add remaining ingredients.** > All other listed ingredients are consumed at a 1-to-1 ratio unless otherwise stated. > In this example, 1 portion of Moonwater Sealant is consumed. ### Failing A Woodcarving Check On a failed woodcarving check, roll a *woodcarving die* — *your woodcarver level* to see how many ingredients are lost (resulting in a minimum of 1). You must roll separately for both *worked wood blanks* and *raw timber & branches*. For time wasted (resulting in a minimum of 1 hour), roll a *woodcarving die* — *your proficiency bonus* (only if you are proficient with Woodcarver's Tools). > [!note] > Splits and grain failures in wood are considered catastrophic: a blank that cracks during shaping cannot be salvaged and counts as total loss of that material component. ## Recipes Woodcarving patterns for arcane focuses and enchanted carvings are passed through druidic circles and carving guilds.
