# Magic ## Categorization In the world of Yanis, magic is largely misunderstood. Sages and scholars have only recently began categorizing different kinds of magic into definitive categories: - Abjuration - Conjuration - Divination - Enchantment - Evocation - Illusion - Necromancy - Transmutation Necromantic magic has a particular pull to it. There are certain regions within the world that strictly forbid the use of all necromantic magic. There are others who nurture its use. Consider this when creating a spellcaster or magic user. Learn more about each category of magic below: ### Abjuration Abjuration magic encompasses protective spells. Abjuration spells often create physical or magical barriers, negate magical or physical abilities, harm trespassers, or even banish subjects to other planes of existence. ### Conjuration Sometimes confused with [[#Evocation|evocation]] magic, conjuration magic calls forth materials, creatures, or energy to the caster. Conjuration magic can also be used to send creatures to other places—either to far away locations or to entirely different planes of existence. ### Divination Divination magic enables casters to learn secrets long forgotten, interpret dreams, predict possible futures, find hidden things, or foil deceptive spells. Divination spells also allow spellcasters to [[detect magic]], and [[scrying]]. ### Enchantment Spells in the enchantment category affect the minds of others. Enchantments can influence or control others' behavior. Spells such as [[charm person]] and [[enthrall]] fall into this category. ### Evocation Evocation magic includes spells that manipulate energy or tap an unseen source of power in order to produce desired ends. In effect, evocation spells create something out of nothing. Many conjuration spells produce spectacular effects, and can potentially deal large amounts of damage. Many iconic offensive spells such as [[magic missile]], [[lightning bolt]], and [[fireball]] are evocation spells. ### Illusion Often, illusion magic includes spells that deceive senses or the minds of others. Illusions cause creatures to see things that are not there, not see things that are there, hear phantom noises, or remember things that never happened. Some Illusion spells include [[invisibility]] and [[disguise self]]. ### Necromancy Necromancy magic spells manipulate the power of death, unlife, and life force itself. Necromancy spells largely revolve around the [[undead]]. Spells such as [[animate dead]] and [[finger of death]] fall into this category. ### Transmutation Finally, transmutation magic consists of spells that change the physical properties of creatures, materials, or conditions. This category of magic was once known as alteration magic. ## Elements Another means of categorizing magic is by its elemental affinity. In Yanis, there are 15 recognized elements. See the table below to see an elements most frequently associated damage types: | Elemental Affinity | Common Damage Type(s) | | ------------------ | ------------------------------------------- | | Force | Force | | Light | Radiant | | Dark | Necrotic | | Soul | Force, necrotic, or radiant | | Mind | Psychic | | Acid | Acid | | Poison | Poison | | Fire | Fire | | Jolt | Lightning | | Earth | Bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing | | Ore | Bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing | | Air | Bludgeoning, piercing, slashing, or thunder | | Sound | bludgeoning, or thunder | | Water | Bludgeoning, or cold | | Ice | Bludgeoning, cold, piercing, or slashing | Each element has a pair or counterpart with the exception of Force—which is largely referred to as true magic or raw magic. Force weaves through all other elements and is the carrier for spells. Some spells, like [[Eldritch Blast]] or [[Magic Missile]], are pure concentrations of force energy. Some pairs, for example, are Soul and Mind or Earth and Ore. Some elemental pairings have tighter bonds and relationships than others. For examples, the four classical elements, air, earth, fire, and water have the counterparts, sound, ore, jolt, and ice respectively.
